Thank you again for following along so far with my 3D art learning journey!

Thank you for following along with my 3D art learning journey!

As I’ve mentioned throughout this series, these weekly posts have tracked my progress as a 3D artist—a central project for my Seminar class at Clark University. At the start of the semester, my goal was simple: to teach myself industry-standard programs and techniques to elevate my work as a 3D artist.

Looking back, I have accomplished a lot in just one semester:

  • Challenged my fear and dove deeper into Substance Designer

  • Learned and practiced creating Trim Sheets to texture modular environments

  • Dove deeper into understanding Blender (collection instances!)

  • Learned how to use Grease Pencils in Blender

  • Building portfolio tips and skills

  • Modeling and texturing a stylized crab (first stylized asset ever!)

  • Designing a modular haunted school hallway

  • Sculpting and texturing my first character, and even making it stylized!

I learned and practiced a lot of different and varying techniques, and broadened my knowledge about what it means to be a 3D artist. What are my takeaways from this semester?

Be Specific

I initially aimed to define a very specific focus for my work. However, I’ve realized that my greatest strength right now is my versatility. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed exploring different areas—from character sculpting to environment design. While I have developed a particular passion for stylized assets, I am excited to continue exploring these disciplines to see where my career naturally leads.

Participate in Challenges

One of the most important portfolio tips I discovered was the value of participating in community challenges. I’ve realized that I want to be more than just a student; I want to be an active part of the 3D art community. Moving forward, I plan to participate in art challenges and engage more deeply with the 3D art community.

Post My Art Online (ArtStation, Instagram)

My next technical hurdle is to refine my topology and improve my UV mapping. Once I’ve polished my current assets, I intend to publish them on platforms like ArtStation and Instagram. I’m looking forward to receiving constructive feedback and connecting with other artists as I transition from a college student to a professional.

Hold Myself Accountable Outside of School

In the past, my practice has often been interrupted by "summer fun." As I graduate, I want to hold myself accountable to a more consistent schedule, perhaps aiming for one asset per week. I’m still planning the logistics, but staying consistent is my priority.

I Like Sculpting

Picking up ZBrush this year was a game-changer. It transformed how I think about digital art, bridging the gap between drawing and 3D space. ZBrush is now a permanent fixture in my toolkit, and I look forward to mastering its more advanced features, especially retopology.

Reflections

I feel incredibly satisfied to have faced my learning fears head-on. By deepening my understanding of Blender, ArtStation, and Substance Designer, I’ve unlocked new creative possibilities.

I am eager to find a job or internship that challenges me with new software and workflows. There is always something new to learn in the 3D world, and I’m excited to see the artist I will become in the years ahead.

Thank you all for being part of this experience. While this is the end of my seminar blog, this is just the beginning of my journey. Follow my Instagram and ArtStation to keep up with my latest work. Until next time!
